Transcontinental Railroad Exploration 5-15-10

So on the 15th of May I meet up with a small group of cruisers from the Wasatch Cruisers to run a portion of the old Central Pacific Railroad, stopping at the Sun Tunnels, the township sites of Terrace and Kelton and then making our way to the Spiral Jetty.

The trip took us from Wendover, Nevada to just north of Brigham City, Utah covering approximately 170 miles of dirt roads.

Well, enough of the rambling on to the photo's:

Headin on out to the Sun Tunnels:

It's surprising that after all these years the route is still straight.

The trip overall was mostly uneventually up until the time we were leaving the Jetty. The yellow/green FJ posted a few photo's back up decided to throw a fit and sending the fan into the radiator. Needless to say it had to be towed about 30 (about half dirt road, half paved) miles to the nearest town until the owner could come back and get it with a trailer.

The part of that trip that scared us the most was descending a hill with the vehicle in tow. Kind of a little pucker factor to it. :Wow1::Wow1:

Besides that the trip was great and everyone had a good time.

Farmington Canyon 5-9-10

Decided to run up Farmington Canyon today to see what the road conditions were. The main road up is in great shape and you don't hit snow line until your about 3/4 of the way up to the junction of Francis Peak and Skyline Drive.

However, both roads are still closed. Skyline still has about a good 2-3' of snow on it. Francis Peak is clear as far as the eye can see but probable still snow packed towards the top.

Despite the roads being closed it wasn't a total waste of time (kind of fiqured as much)the melting snow made for some great water shots. That and I ended up filling up a Walmart bag full of nails and spent casings.

The condition of Skyline Drive. My guess is there is probable still a good 2-3' of some in this area, probable more up top.

Meet a this little fella along the way.

Moab: Hurrah Pass and Chicken Corners

This past weekend I had the chance to head to Moab, Utah to take care of some personal business. Saturday was mostly spent taking care of said business and just tooling around town checking it out. I say this Moab attracts some interesting individuals.

Saturday night was spent in the KOA. If your wanting to have a campfire at the KOA they don't allow, which kind of irritated me. Next, time I'll camp somewhere else.

Sunday morning I was up and at it a 6am to get packed back up to hit the trail before anyone else, that and too take a shower (one plus to the KOA I guess).

Not really knowing the area too well, I headed up a my Kane Creek Blvd. To Hurrah Pass and then onto Chicken Corner, did some research on these before hand. The trip out to Chicken Corners was mostly uneventfully but well worth it to be on the trail without much traffic. Heading back out I ran into traffic's, Rhino's and Jeeps and Dirt Bikes Oh, MY! Oh an a few mountain bikers thrown into the mix.

Well, enough of my rambling onto the photo's.

What's the deal with this structure?

My 4runner looks so small compared to the massive plateau behind it

Can you spot the hiking trail at the end of Chicken Corners trail?

The dork behind the camera and wheel

What's that across the canyon?

Oh, wait that's another group of vehicles.

A trail for another time and another vehicle

Next time I go to Moab hopefully, I'll have more time to research the area and the trails.

Lockhart Basin and some of those mountain bike trails are calling my name to return
